Where did the time go....

Today was one of those days that make you stop and reflect and wonder where the time goes. I know my kids are getting bigger and growing and learning, but when I get to step back and witness it, it is amazing.

Two "rite of passage" things happened today.

Collin came home from school, sans one of his teeth. He turns 7 tomorrow, but still hasn't lost any teeth. The dentist said it was close and it seems like he has has loose teeth forever. Well--it happened today. He lost his first tooth and you could tell he was so pleased. And now my "little" Collin has a toothless smile. Usually you can't even get him to smile for photos, but he did several for me tonight to get this gem!

And then, my sweet Avery earned his Arrow of Light in Cub Scouts.

To back up a little, today when I read my friend Cheryl's post about her first Cub Scout activity, it brought back so many memories. When we started Cub Scouts when AVery turned 8, I really didn't know much about it at all. So, like everything else with an oldest child, he was the guinea pig. I don't have this huge love for scouting and have often joked that Heavenly Father knew that when I got 3 boys (more years than I can count of scouting--7 years in a row of Cub Scout day camp).
But Avery has loved Cubs. He has loved the activites, day camp, friends there--just everything. I have really enjoyed doing it with him, and I'm sure it's just cause it is one thing that makes him happy. And, with lots of reminders and prodding, he has worked to earn his achievements. Well, AVery turns 11 in January and will move on from Cubs. And he has earned the highest award that a Cub Scout can earn, the ARrow of Light. At times I wondered if it would happen, but he really came through and I am so proud of him. It was so bittersweet to see him tonight. He knew it was his last Cub Scout activity and I could tell it was so hard for him. He doesn't want to move on and honestly I don't blame him. He will be the only 11 year old scout for 6 months. But his leader is great and I know he will get in the rhythm. I could tell tonight he was trying to put on a happy face, but one of his leaders gave him a hug and told him how proud they were and how much they would miss him and my sweet boy just lost it. He has such a tenderness to him, it just made my heart melt.

It was such a special night and we were so glad Reed was able to adjust his schedule to be there and he also got to help present the award.

We wanted to do something fun to recognize Avery, so we made him a candy bar card. I put it on his bed while he was getting ready for bed. He was so sweet about it. He said, "mom, you didn't have to get me something. Earning the award should be enough." Now--I think he sort of believes that, but I was so glad we did a little something to recognize him. We have made these cards for others before and I could tell he loved getting one.

It's such a busy week for our family--lots of special days. But this really was a true "moms" day--getting to see my boys grow!

Heather, I had never given thought to what I'm in for with three boys and scouts - yikes! It's fun to read about your kids and learn more about them and their personalities.
